- Established 1959 as the world's first modern free-trade zone; a 2.43 sq km / ~254-hectare international business park adjacent to Shannon Airport, Co. Clare, hosting 150+ companies. Special tax incentives on staff and profits ended in 2003; today all firms in Ireland are treated equally and SFZ operates without additional tax benefits. Remains a customs-free zone allowing deferral of duty on goods imported from non-EU countries until they leave the zone destined for another EU country. Companies are eligible for IDA Ireland / Enterprise Ireland and Shannon Group supports including Employment, R&D, Training and Capital grants. IDA Ireland handles FDI in the region; Enterprise Ireland handles investment by Irish firms (since 2006).
